Google is ramping up its efforts to protect Android users from rising digital threats. With the upcoming Android 16 release, the company is introducing five new tools aimed at curbing scams and spam activities across calls, messages, apps, and network access.
Android 16 will deploy an upgraded call screening feature that automatically identifies and blocks suspicious calls. The tool disables sideloading routes used by attackers and ensures that the Play Protect security service cannot be turned off remotely. Additionally, the system will prevent users from sharing screens with unknown callers, a tactic often used to extract sensitive data. All checks and actions occur locally on the device, safeguarding personal data from being uploaded to external servers.
Google is introducing stronger message scanning in Android 16 to counter SMS-based fraud. The system flags messages containing risky links, fake lottery offers, or impersonation attempts. When a potentially harmful message is received, a prominent warning box appears to alert the user. This alert system extends to tech support scams and misleading advertisements as well.
The update strengthens Google Play Protect's real-time app scanning. It blocks installation attempts from unverified sources and sideloaded APKs. Users will receive immediate warnings if an app appears malicious. These security layers ensure that apps bypassing the Play Store are flagged before installation.
Android 16 introduces fake cell tower detection, addressing concerns around Stingray attacks. This tool alerts users when their phone connects to a suspicious mobile network that may be used to intercept data or track activity. While the feature will be available in Android 16, its functionality will be limited to newer smartphone models initially.
Android 16 is embedding proactive browser-based protection that warns users before accessing potentially unsafe websites. This tool also works in tandem with app permissions to restrict the access of high-risk applications and blocks online fraud attempts in real-time.
